Laos Itinerary and Map: One Week, Two Weeks, Three Weeks Visit

This article provides a suggested Laos itinerary and map for one, two or three weeks in the country: where to go in Laos, places to visit in Laos, and what to do in Laos including Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, Pakse and Savannaketh.

We had an amazing time in Laos and though more touristy than it was during my youth, it was a very relaxing visit. A nice break from the backpackers’ trail of Vietnam and Cambodia.

Below is a suggested itinerary to visit Laos including Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng but also Pakse and Savannaketh.

Vientiane : the Capital of Laos, though many people recommend skipping it, I think spending a couple of days here is a good introduction to the country. Read our guide on what to do in Vientiane in Two Days

Luang Prabang  : Luang Prabang was my (and every other travelers’ we’ve met, it seems) favorite place in Laos. Blooming flowers, quiet streets, charming architecture – it has all of the ingredients to seduce you. I could easily spend over a week in Luang Prabang.

Vang Vieng  : if you are not interested in tubing (the activity is now closed – or at least drinking while tubing has), it is still a low-key town worth a visit for the Golden Cave and blue lagoon.

These are not the only places to visit in Laos, if you have more time, head south. Visit the second and third most populated cities: Savannaketh and Pakse.

Savannaketh  : The second most populous city in the country. Laid-back, sleepy town with heavy French colonial architecture.

Pakse  : The third largest city in Laos. Go for the Si Phan Don  4,000 islands and the UNESCO World Heritage Site: Wat Phou.

Don’t forget to indulge and discover the delicious cuisine of Laos, spicyness expected! (you can always ask ‘bo pet’ for ‘not spicy’)
